Massive $1.5 Billion Mega Millions Prize Still Unclaimed

2018-12-20

The single winning ticket in the October 2018 massive Mega Millions lottery jackpot is still unclaimed. This can mean one of several things. It could be that the winner is holding on to the ticket while they consult with lawyers/financial advisors. They could also be waiting for their gold plated Bentley to be delivered so that they can roll up to the lottery office in style to claim their winnings.

It could however also mean that the lottery ticket is lost or destroyed. The lucky winner has 180 days in which to claim the winning ticket. If you live in Simpsonville, South Carolina and notice more and more people dumpster diving at the KC Mart there, where the winning ticket was sold, don't be alarmed, it's just people searching for the ticket.

If the ticket goes unclaimed after 180 days, the jackpot will be split between the the states that participate in the Mega Millions lottery. That's a big loss for the winner who will have passed up on $1.5 billion but a big win for lottery states. Conspiracy theory junkies, feel free to add in your comments here.

Personally I think there are better ways to distribute all that unclaimed money. The US population currently stands at 325 million. Split evenly that's just over $4 per person. For that much money everyone could get 2 free lottery tickets, or half a Harry Potter book (couples could get together to splurge on a full book), or a 4 for $4 meal from Wendy's.

What would you do with your $4?
